History of the First Unitarian Christian Church and Denomination
The Unitarian faith was founded as an organized Christian denomination in Transylvania by Francis David (Ferenc David) who lived between 1510-1579. He served as the first bishop of the newly formed Unitarian Church. Prior to his involvement with the Unitarian Reformation, he served as a Catholic, Lutheran, and Calvinist priest. In 1568, with the support of the Hungarian King John Sigismund II, the Edict of Turda was proclaimed to promote religious freedom in Christian Europe. This proclamation remained in effect until the death of the King in 1571. His successor, a devout Trinitarian, rejected all forms of religious innovation, and as a result, Bishop Francis David was sentenced to life in prison and died at the Deva Castle in 1579. After the martyrdom of the leader of the Unitarian Christian Movement, persecution of Unitarian Christians continued and the faith endured many hardships before establishing independent churches in various parts of Europe and America. Today, Unitarian Christianity remains a small denomination and distinct theology within the Christian religion, but this shortage of adherents hasn't hindered the faith from spreading to Non-Western societies. According to recent statistics, Unitarian congregations can be found in places as far away as Asia and Africa. What is more, Modern Christian Unitarianism has emerged as a dynamic faith community, comprised of Unitarians from all schools of thought and denominational affiliations.
